Throughout UBC's history, faculty, alumni, and former students have played prominent roles in many different fields. Many UBC alumni and faculty have gone on to win awards including seven Nobel Prizes and 67 Rhodes Scholarships. UBC alumni have additionally held important positions in the academia. Notable examples are: Indira Samarasekera, twelfth president of the University of Alberta; Amit Chakma, president of the University of Western Ontario; John H.
