School Description
Western Kentucky University’s history dates back to 1906, when the Kentucky General Assembly approved legislation to establish two teacher training institutions in the state. In 1911, the school moved to its present site on ‘the Hill’ – which was the former home of The Pleasant J. Potter College. Over the next decade, the curriculum focused on teacher training and certification. In 1922 the state renamed the institution Western Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College and authorised it to grant four-year degrees.
WKU's campus expanded in 1927 when it merged with Ogden College, a private young men’s school located on the east side of the Hill. Around this time, WKU's name was shortened to Western Kentucky State Teachers College. In 1931 the University introduced its first masters of art degree. In 1963, Western merged with the Bowling Green College of Commerce. Along with the Graduate School, the Bowling Green College of Commerce became a separate college within WKU. In 1965 three more colleges were established: Potter College of Liberal Arts, College of Education, and Ogden College of Science and Technology.
In 1966 Western Kentucky State College became Western Kentucky University. More colleges and reorganisation followed throughout the years as WKU continued to expand. The College of Health and Human Services was established in 2002. The Division of Extended Learning and Outreach (DELO) launched in 2003 and the Honors College in 2008. Today, the University has six colleges which is home to more than 20,000 students.

Landon Atkinson
2004-2007, Marketing/Business
"I graduated from WKU in 2007. My time there was primarily spent in the GFCOB in the marketing and entrepreneurship department. When I was studying there, the entrepreneurship program was in it's beginning phases. WKU made a great effort to attract very high-caliber professors with incredible industry experience to teach many of the classes. I was given the tools necessary by these professors to start my own business afterwards and launch a great career in the marketing industry. It may be a bold statement, but I'd put myself, based on my education and experience gained at GFCOB, against any of my Ivy League peers in my current workplace."
Bonnie Reuling
1967-1971, Education
"I loved attending Western. Bowling Green is a welcoming city to the University. I had lots of friends and lots of good times at Western with my Kappa Delta Sisters. I had no trouble securing a teaching job as soon as I graduated from Western. Education program at Western is outstanding. The campus is beautiful located in southern Kentucky. The city has grown since I graduated. Many more restaurants and attractions. Beach Bend was our venue for many sorority parties. Many more places to have formal parties today. Friendly campus, great place to begin a career path."
Cynthia Howard-Cottongim
1983-1988, Physical Education & Parks & Recreation Administration
"Western Kentucky Univerity gave me the education and confidence to face the world! Attending WKU was a rewarding experience in so many ways. I'll always treasure my years on the hill!"
