Wesleyan College was established through a charter on December 23, 1836, becoming the oldest Women's college in the world. The school was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church based on the concern it had for women's education. When the College opened its doors in 1839, ninety women were enrolled in the first session.
Today, Wesleyan continues to be the pioneer of women's education. The college continues to strengthen its preparation of female students in the Biological and Physical science fields. Wesleyan introduced an academic freshman seminar more than two decades ago. In recent years the College introduced the capstone seminar in general education. The College is also taking the lead in interdisciplinary education, designing courses and faculty positions that bridge the various fields of knowledge.
