School Description

Wake Forest University was founded after the North Carolina Baptist State Convention purchased a 600-acre (2.4 km2) plantation from Dr. Calvin Jones in an area north of Raleigh (Wake County) called the "Forest of Wake." The new school, designed to teach both Baptist ministers and laymen, opened on February 3, 1834, as the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute, named because students and staff were required to spend half of each day doing manual labor on the plantation.

I grew up hearing about the wonders of Wake from my father (WFU '70) who played football for the school. (It broke his heart when I chose to stay in California for my undergrad experience.) When I finally came to Wake for the MA in English, I realized he hadn't been exaggerating. What an incredible experience! Rigorous yet supportive in an open and creative atmosphere. And although I have attended three private colleges, Wake Forest is the standard to which I hold them all. My time at Wake changed my life for the better. Go Deacs!

Wake's unique. It's a small school that can be as big as you want. It's changed a lot since I attended, but there's still a great feel to the place and a fine sense of belonging amongst Deacons. Still proud to be one of a few.

I had just finished a two year course in electronics at Forsyh Technical Community College. Management at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company suggested continuing my education at Wake Forest. It was providential. My professors took a personal interest in helping me successfully complete my studies. It was truly an amazing, life changing experience. I am so grateful to Wake Forest for making it all possible.
