School Description

University of Notre Dame, founded by a French priest, Rev. Edward Sorin and seven of his companions, on January 15, 1844 was named ‘L’Université de Notre Dame du Lac’ meaning, ‘The University of Our Lady of the lake’ in honour of Our Lady. In 1879, a raging fire destroyed the main building but Father Sorin rebuilt the structure that still stands today, topped by a gleaming Golden Dome.

In its early years Notre Dame was where the first national study of Catholic elementary and secondary education as well as most extensive study of Catholic parish life and historical study of the Hispanic Catholic community in the United States was done. Over the years however, it has grown to become one of America’s leading undergraduate teaching institutions, and has been at the forefront in research and scholarship. The aerodynamics of glider flight, the transmission of wireless messages, and the formulae for synthetic rubber were pioneered at the University; and today researchers are achieving breakthroughs in astrophysics, radiation chemistry, environmental sciences, tropical disease transmission, peace studies, cancer, robotics, and nanoelectronics.

Some notable alumni include, Dr. James Muller, co-founder of Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize); Eric Wieschaus, 1995 winner of the Nobel Prize in physiology; George Dohrmann, Pulitzer Prize winner (2000) for beat reporting; Greg Aiello, vice president of public relations, National Football League and Ernesto Perez Balladares, former president of Panama.

A popular superstition at Notre Dame University is: If you walk up the steps of the Main Building you will not graduate. Hence on the flip side this has become a tradition to take a picture at commencement on those same stairs.

y ND years were priceless and I appreciate them more now than I did as a student. There is not one day where I don't use lessons learned at ND in my life or business. We are the Fighting Irish!
