School Description

Mount Union was founded by Orville Nelson Hartshorn in 1846 as a place where men and women could be educated with equal opportunity, and without distinction based on race, color or sex. Hartshorn started the school on the third floor of the ‘Old Carding Mill’ with just six students. In 1849 the school came to be known as ‘Mount Union Seminary’. In 1853 the school started training of teachers and on January 9, 1858, the institution was chartered and incorporated under the laws of the State of Ohio as Mount Union College.

Although Mount Union was not established by church efforts, its founder and early faculty members were dedicated Methodist laymen. One of the articles in the charter of the institution looked to the day when Mount Union would come under the patronage of some annual conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In September 1911, Scio University merged with Mount Union and on August 1, 2010, the institution officially became known as the University of Mount Union. Mount Union is now affiliated with the East Ohio, West Ohio and Western Pennsylvania Conferences of the United Methodist Church.

I believe Mount Union is providing me with important knowledge and hands-on experiences so that I can continue my education in graduate school and make my dream come true, which is to be a physics professor. Mount’s liberal arts education is important because it fosters critical thinking and analytical skills that are extremely important for students to adapt to a rapidly changing workforce.

            Endless Opportunities

I appreciate the opportunities Mount Union gives all students to expand their knowledge not only in one area, but in various ones throughout the liberal arts. In Mexico, we do not have minors, so I think having them is a great way to learn about other areas of study that I am interested in, and the extra knowledge I’ve gained could eventually help me when looking for a job in the near future.

            Hearing about Mount Union

I heard about Mount Union through my university, Universidad de las Américas (UDLA), in Mexico City. We have an exchange program with Mount Union. The other international students, faculty and staff truly make Mount Union my second home. They are so welcoming and always willing to help others. Going to a smaller school like Mount allows for more personal attention from both my professors and classmates, which ultimately helps me focus on my academics. I also really love Mount Union’s high academic performance. The Integrative Core has allowed me to grow as a writer and a speaker by taking a variety of liberal arts classes.
