Hartford and STN 2: Your Pathway to a Rewarding Career in Television

I would not have the career I enjoy without the valuable hands-on experience I gained at the University of Hartford. As an undergrad in 1993 I joined a new club at the University; Student Television News (STN 2). That spring, UHart launched the first live weekly student news broadcast in New England. It was %100 student operated and funded by private donors. By my senior year I had a slot in the press booth for Hartford Whalers home games and a seat as co-anchor of the weekly newscast. My time with the first dedicated crew at STN 2 was immersive and hands-on. Over 20 years later, the STN 2 tradition proudly continues, launching many successful careers in broadcasting and television along with an expanding alumni network. I have interviewed graduates from "big" broadcasting schools who were looking for their first foot-in-the-door opportunity, and while all of them were qualified, none of them had HALF of the practical experience a UHart STN 2 grad boasts. Not by a long shot. When asked when they first got their hands on a field camera, taken editing lessons or plied their skills on a master control board, nearly every one of them hadn't touched an electronic device with their school's name on it until the end of the second semester of their sophomore years AT THE ABSOLUTE EARLIEST! Further, a few of those job-seekers carried a sense entitlement that was often too hard to look beyond. Hartford students are dedicated, driven, humble and fiercely loyal to their sense of purpose. The University of Hartford may be small by comparison, but Hartford graduates are doing incredibly BIG things. And with four potential years of hands-on experience in a live TV news environment, they earn their stripes from day one.

Think Out Of The Box University

Even though it’s been a few years since I graduated I was given the honor to visit the school in Jan 2013 as I was elected to the Barney School Hall of Fame. The reality is that even though many of the professors that I had have moved on the essenced of the school still remained the same. University of Hartford is so fortunate to still have two of my ( Dr Charles Canedy III and Dr Malek Lashgari ) favorite professors. The two of them and what from I gathered from the many students I met that the emphasis is still “Don’t just read about it but instead also try and experience it where possible.” I’m extremely fortunate that I was given the opportunity to go to University of Hartford and even though again the names and faces have changed the address is still the same ( 200 Bloomfield Ave. West Hartford, Conn )

The experience you gain here is worth every penny

I do believe you would need to consider where you expected to work after qualification to ensure that University of Hartford could provide what you need. They have suitable courses, their academic standing is excellent. The environment was described as “a piece of heaven” and I still marvel at how beautiful the landscape is. I personally have never regretted attending UHart
