Centre of it all

Derby is the UK’s most central city so it is at the heart of the transport network too. This means it’s a thriving multicultural city renowned for technology and innovation. It’s why many global companies are based here, such as Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Bombardier. It’s an exciting place to learn and experience university life, providing you with many opportunities to gain real world experience through placements and internships. There’s a lively night life with plenty of bars, clubs, restaurants and live music venues for those that want it, and the Peak District National Park is close by offering inspiring countryside and exhilarating outdoor activities.

Personal learning experience

Students are taught by passionate, industry-experienced lecturers who have long-standing relationships with leading employers. They will inspire and support student goals and offer a personal learning experience with one to one support. That’s why we’ve been recognised by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017 as being in the Top 20 in the country for Teaching Quality.

We have a greater staff to student ratio than most other universities, which means students will get more dedicated time with their lecturers in seminars and on work projects. It’s this approach that sees our students go on to take roles with leading national and international employers, such as the BBC, Lego, and Elemis.

2007-2010, BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance

UoD helped me reach my goals...

I graduated with a BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance degree (1st Class) in 2010 and this helped secure a training contract with a central London mid tier accountancy practice. I am now a qualified Associate Chartered Accountant with the ICAEW and in 4 years have extensive accountancy and external audit experience. More recently, I have moved into a corporate finance role and assisting with establishing this department. Without the continued support and expertise of lecturers, tutors and staff, I would have not been able to realise such achievements. With this in mind, I would not hesitate in recommending the Business, Computing and Law School at the University of Derby. I have very fond memories of my time in Derby and do not underestimate the impact a non redbrick university can have on your future career aspirations!

            2008-2013, BSc (Hons) Zoology

            A Helpful, Friendly, Fantastic Uni!

I studied BSc (Hons) Zoology at the University of Derby 2010-2013. I chose it because of two major factors- the prospectus showed an alumnus who had done the course I was looking at doing, in the same job I wanted to be doing after uni, and after visiting 5 other universities, I got out of the car and Derby felt right. The Kedleston Road campus has a brilliant atmosphere, whether it be the music and various student campaigns going on, or just the feel of the place. Busy or quiet, it's somewhere you can fit in. The university has been continually uraded and refurbished since I joined, with brand new science labs and a new central area installed and a new sports building being added as of late 2014. The staff I got to know over my three years were absolutely brilliant. They were helpful, friendly and unlike some universities, they were actually there to teach you! The faculty staff loved sharing their own passions with us and it was brilliant to be given the chance to be involved with their research as students. The support was great too, they sorted my Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) out quickly and with great understanding. The halls are great too, I can highly recommend St Christophers Court as I spent my first two years there, but the others are just as well run and not a bad price either for what you get. I spent many evenings playing pool in the common room, or having movie marathons with pizza and friends. If you go and get the chance, become a Student Ambassador (they're the ones in the orange shirts at the open days). Yuo get so much useful experience and it's a great way to bond with your lecturers and learn the iside scoop on your course!
