School Description

University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) history dates back to 1859, when the Medical College of Alabama was founded. In 1936 the Birmingham Extension Centre of the University of Alabama was opened. In 1945 the Medical College of Alabama was shifted from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham. And in November 1966 the Extension Centre and the Medical Centre joined together to form the University of Alabama in Birmingham. At first it was a part of the University of Alabama (in Tuscaloosa), then later in 1969 UAB was granted the status of an independent institution. UAB is the sole public, four-year degree granting university in Alabama’s largest metropolitan area. It is also the largest research centre in the region as well as the largest employer in Birmingham.

At present UAB hosts students from more than 95 countries and offers more than 250 programs. UAB’s National Alumni Society aims to increase the amount of scholarships each year in order to assist UAB students, ones that could potentially become future alumni. In 2015 the UAB National Alumni Society provided nearly $775,000 worth of scholarships, grants and gifts to the university, which was used to help incoming freshman, transfer students, graduate students, upperclassmen and international students.
