School Description

The origin of the University for the Creative Arts lies in a number of independent public art and design colleges in the counties of Kent and Surrey, almost all of which had origins in the Victorian period. In the 1990s, these merged to form multi-campus art and design institutes in their respective counties, before uniting to become a single organisation – the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) – in 2005.

Today UCA is the highest-ranking creative arts university in the UK. As one of the largest specialist creative arts universities in Europe, the University for the Creative Arts, UCA offers a global perspective in creative education, with 20% of its student population coming from outside the UK – 110 nations from all over the world. UCS’ notable alumni include: Turner Prize nominated artist, Tracey Emin; Fashion designers, Karen Millen and Dame Zandra Rhodes; Film and TV Directors, Gareth Edwards (Monsters and Godzilla) and Will McGregor (Misfits, Poldark); Oscar-nominated animator and creator of Peppa Pig, Mark Baker; and Oscar-winning filmmaker, graphic designer and author, Arnold Schwartzman, among others.
