School Description

Truman State University was established in 1867 by founder Joseph Baldwin. In 1996 the school officially changed its name from Northeast Missouri State University to Truman State University. The name change was in honor of former United States President Harry S. Truman, who is the only Missouri native to become President.

Joseph Baldwin created the university with the vision of having a ‘rigorous educational environment’. And that has helped make Truman State University the only public highly selective Liberal Arts and Sciences Institution in the State of Missouri. Truman State has just over 5000 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students. It also has 400 international students coming from 50 countries. The University has over 240 student organisations, with five of those organisations concerning international students. Perhaps the University’s most notable alumni is actress Jenna Fischer, who is famous for her role in the hit show The Office.

My experience at then Northeast Missouri State University was fantastic as their school of business was one of the best curriculums in the country. My degree was in Business Administration along with heavy focus in accounting and economics. Their professors were top-notch and my degree from now Truman University gave me a foundation in business that has served me well over the past 40 years plus. I highly recommend Truman University to those pursuing a career in business where you will be challenged to excel and grow.

Truman State University is sometimes referred to as the "Harvard of the Midwest" or the "Princeton of the Prairie" - because it is rightfully known for its excellence in academics, and I truly benefited from that, but I will always promote it for the community. The supportive, social, and hardworking group of students, faculty, and staff comes together organically to make time in Kirksville feel like home. In a lot of ways, my undergraduate experience was an upbringing because of the relationships that I developed over the years that challenged, supported, and taught me about becoming an adult and a citizen of the world - all within the city limits of Kirksville, Missouri. I am proud to be a Truman State University Alum, and I am always eager to recommend the educational community experience to those looking for the best place to learn and grow academically, intellectually, and emotionally.
