School Description

St George’s University of London’s history dates back to 1733 when the St George’s Hospital opened at Lanesborough House at Hyde Park Corner. In 1751 the apprentice doctors were formally registered and by 1754 John Hunter, the renowned surgeon, commenced courses of study at St George. In 1915 St George became the first university in London to enroll female students during the World War I.

By 2000 St George became the first university in the UK to start the MBBS Graduate Entry Programme (GEP), which is a four-year, fast-track medical degree course open to graduates from any discipline. St George works in partnership with many organisations. One such partnership is with the NHS Foundation Trust, which is one of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals. This partnership enables students to gain up-to-date clinical insights and learn in a professional healthcare set-up. St George’s partnership with Kingston University results in the joint offering of courses in health and social care; students can gain advantage from the unique multi-faculty experience provided through Kingston along with the health expertise provided by St George.

Great on Communication Skills and Exposure, with Clinical Focus on Teaching

It's a nurturing environment, with lots of extracurricular opportunities and genuine camaraderie between students. Not competitive and back stabby like I've heard about other institutions. Great exposure, given the proximity to a large patient pool and top of their game consultants - particularly neuro, cardiology, oncology, psych and GP. Small group communication skills teaching left me feeling well prepared and confident to handle tense or upsetting situations at work in an empathetic and effective way. You also leave well prepared for analysing medical research and conducting your own audits or clinical trials, and have particularly good exposure to researchers in public health, oncology and embryology. Increasingly over the 5 year course, your lecturers will be clinicians practicing the field they are teaching. There are great opportunities for CV building such as a free course in Biomedical Management run in the evenings. You als have the opportunity to intercalate a degree, or a study module within it, at one of the other London colleges - should you want to experience a broader range of undergraduates and topics e.g. medical law or philosophy. Tooting is also a great place to base yourself as a student with relatively cheap rent and local restaurants compared to other areas in London, whilst easily commutable into central London. I highly recommend being in London as a student. Make use of the theatre discounts and never ending options for culture vultures and party animals alike.
