School Description

Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville (SIUE) was founded in 1956 by a bunch of business leaders and concerned parents of the community who felt there was a great need for higher education opportunities in the great St. Louis area. SIUE opened two residence centers and in 1958 the Council began a fund raising campaign to acquire land for the new campus. In 1959 the number of students enrolled in SIUE amounted to 3800.

Since then the University has built itself up to become a premier Metropolitan University accommodating a student body of about 14,000. SIUE is a student-centric academic institute, focused on diversity of ideas and expansion of knowledge; it is also the biggest employer in Southwestern Illinois, employing approximately 2500 full time employees. SIUE is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. The University has also joined the Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP).
