School Description

Shepherd University traces its early beginnings from the year 1871 when the county seat of Jefferson County was moved to Charles Town where a vacated courthouse was repurposed for providing education to the people of Shepherdstown. It was later incorporated into Shepherd College with the aim to instruct students in language, arts and sciences and in September that same year opened its doors to just 42 students.

Today, Shepherd University's campus in Shepherdstown overlooks the Potomac River and houses its 4 schools through which it offers over 30 bachelor's degree and 5 master's degree programs in areas of arts and humanities, business and social sciences, education and professional studies, and natural sciences and mathematics. It enrolls nearly 4,000 graduate and undergraduate students, 29% of which are accommodated in the university's 7 on-campus residence halls and apartments.
