School Description

Less than a year after California was granted statehood, Santa Clara College, forerunner of Santa Clara University, was the first to open its doors to students, and thus is considered the state’s oldest operating institution of higher education. Shortly after Santa Clara began instruction, the Methodist-run California Wesleyan College received a charter from the State Superior Court on July 10, 1851—the first granted in California—and it began enrolling students in May of the following year.

I think about my time at Santa Clara often. I didn't know what kind of college experience to expect (who does?). I knew it as a pretty campus with a Jesuit mission and that my uncle had gotten kicked out back in the 1960's for probably having wayyy too much fun. SCU introduced me to the value I now place on: Small class sizes and personal relationships with professors. Social justice (I had no idea what this meant or looked like in practice until seeing the impact that SCCAP has on students and the community). Ethical decision-making (The Markkula Center opened while I was a student and if you want to get students' attention...open up a new building and start holding conversations around campus). Lifelong friendships. Self-awareness. The journey of finding your place in the global family (even though I "only" went to DC for a semester, I loved seeing my friends' lives change through study abroad opportunities). Finding calm in the storm of stress at 10pm mass in the Mission--always packed the Sunday before finals started. Developing leaders, one at a time. Mixing good health and good fun (I couldn't compete with the world-class athletes but I always played intramural sports and loved them. SCU is truly felt like a university all about the students. I sat on many committees with peers and alongside faculty leaders. Students were respected and part of refining what a degree from SCU ought to mean. Now, 20 years later...SCU, faculty, staff, current students and all the alums...you make me proud!

Santa Clara provided for my entire family a truly challenging educational experience set with the context of living a Christian life. Learning in small classrooms environments, interacting with highly accredited educators, skills, intellect , reasoning and analytical tools were all keenly developed in classrooms set on a truly warm and visually spectacular campus. A sense of community was always present, a tradition of values, morals , and ethical goals always present.
