School Description

Originally, Park University was established in order to train Christian workers. On May 12, 1875 the 'original' 17 students began their classes at a hotel called the 'Old Number One' a hotel next to the railroad tracks and the Missouri River. During this time other buildings became part of the the college campus. Mackay Hall, Snyder Dormitory, Sherwood Dormitory, Nickel Hall, Scott Observatory, Woodward Dormitory, Bakery, Westcott, Alumni Hall and more were built on the river bluffs to accommodate the growing student population.

Originally called Presbyterian college, Park was opened to everyone, regardless of their financial capabilities. Those who could not afford the college tuition could compensate for this by working at the college farm, print shop, power plant. Building on its long and rich history, Park University became a University in 2000. The restoration of Mackay Hall and the White House, and the addition of Copley Quad Residence Hall and a new Downtown location in Kansas City has grown the University from a humble beginning to a leader in education.
