School Description

Oregon State University has roots that go back to 1856 when the area’s first community school, Corvallis Academy was founded. The Academy was renamed Corvallis College in 1858, and a few years later – in 1865 – it adopted a four-year, college-level, liberal arts curriculum. The Oregon Legislative Assembly designated Corvallis College as the state’s land grant college on October 27, 1868. This was the first incident of state support for higher education in Oregon. The institution changed its name approximately 19 times over the years and the name Oregon State University was adopted on March 6, 1961.

Oregon State University, has made an impact across Oregon through groundbreaking research and outstanding students. Some of its notable alumni include: Richard Douglas ‘Dick’ Fosbury, he developed the back-first technique for the high jump, set a record and won gold in 1968 Olympics among other achievements; Linus Pauling won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on the nature of the chemical bond and another for his opposition to nuclear weapons; Douglas Engelbart, also studied at OSU; he is the founder of the computer-pointing device, better known as a mouse; he was also a pioneer in the development of hypertext, networked computers and graphical user interfaces.
