At the time, the institution offered education to engineers and teachers before achieving independence as Old Dominion College in 1962. Its Board of Visitors approved its university status following the considerable growth the institution has achieved throughout the years.

Today, Old Dominion University's main campus in Norfolk is home to its 7 colleges through which the university offers 70 bachelor's degree and 54 master's degree programs to nearly 25,000 students, almost 5% of which are international students from 180 countries across the world, who are all training in areas such as arts and letters, business, education, engineering and technology, health sciences, and sciences.
