        1976-1980, OCA(DU) as a place I call Home

When I went to OCA(D,and recently,U) I found it a place for of wonder. It was a space where anything could happen and it usually did. My head, I'm sure was 5 degrees hotter because of the amount of head work that was done. I never worked so hard, never enjoyed myself so much and came out with so many skills. I followed this up with establishing studios in France, Middle East, the Himalayas and now Great Britain. In all of these studios I practiced what I had learnt at OCA. And I'm still producing. By the way, I'm a painter, Marie Laywine, Artist, Director, Curator.

        1991-1995, You'll Never Regret It

When I went to OCADspaceU It was called OCA. They keep adding letters!? I never worked harder in another academic institution than I did at this one. It is definitely NOT for slackers. For me it was the instructors working in the field they are teaching - they don't walk into the room always exactly knowing what they will tell you that might really stick with you. They may have had a terrible week at their creative job, and a great class teaching - or visa versa. It's the most "hands on" "up front" environment with metal, wood, plastic, jewellery, glass, ceramic, casting, photography, weaving, textiles (etc) shops at your fingertips. WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THAT? I was never one to enjoy so much learning from a book. So between the staff's talents, and honestly extremely already inspiring students....add the shops? HEAVEN for any serious artist or designer.

1987-1990, OCAD Is A World of Wonder

OCA, as it was called when I attended, offered an environment that allowed for creative energy to spring into action and manifest itself into countless mediums. Guided by a faculty of outstanding artists, each day brought forth another path towards freedom of expression. Finding ones voice is never easy, but OCA nurtured each student and gave them the tools to move forward in the world. No matter what kind of work I'm involved in today, most of my methodology and work ethic was developed at OCA and for that I am grateful.
