Mary Baldwin College - Master's Degree
Mary Baldwin College (MBC) founded as Augusta Female Seminary in 1842 by Rufus W. Bailey, is the oldest institution of higher education for women in the US affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. MBC was established in an era when the education of women was an unconventional notion, but belief in the capacity of women to learn, lead, and make a difference in the world prevailed.
Among MBC’s first batch of 57 women, was Mary Julia Baldwin. In 1863, Ms Baldwin went on to become the principal of the seminary and took on the challenge of leading the seminary through a turbulent era; she saw the institution through the Civil War.
In honor of Miss Baldwin, Augusta Female Seminary was renamed Mary Baldwin Seminary in 1895; and became Mary Baldwin College in 1923. In May 2015, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to change the name of the institution to Mary Baldwin University to reflect its growing range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. The will be official as of August 31, 2016.
