School Description

Mary Baldwin College (MBC) founded as Augusta Female Seminary in 1842 by Rufus W. Bailey, is the oldest institution of higher education for women in the US affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. MBC was established in an era when the education of women was an unconventional notion, but belief in the capacity of women to learn, lead, and make a difference in the world prevailed.

Among MBC’s first batch of 57 women, was Mary Julia Baldwin. In 1863, Ms Baldwin went on to become the principal of the seminary and took on the challenge of leading the seminary through a turbulent era; she saw the institution through the Civil War.

In honor of Miss Baldwin, Augusta Female Seminary was renamed Mary Baldwin Seminary in 1895; and became Mary Baldwin College in 1923. In May 2015, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to change the name of the institution to Mary Baldwin University to reflect its growing range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. The will be official as of August 31, 2016.

            Great Expierence

I loved going to MBC online, I especially loved access to the curriculums early to choose the class format best for me. They also have some of the best professors and counselors.

I have never had such devotion

Adult Ed Prg's: I have attended over 4 colleges throughout my educational career of 12yrs. I have never saw such devotion from faculty and staff not only towards my education but to my overall development and personal success. Thank you for not only teaching the fundamentals but caring enough to extend a hand when someone is having a rough time. This was the best move I ever made. Hats off to the Roanoke VA campus, and especially Jackie Stanley, I may not be the education instructor my degree promised but I have used many of my skills in the business world as a leader and a team instructor. Thank you!! <3

            Unique & Rewarding Experience

When I tell people I went to an all girls school, they cringe. However, my time at Mary Baldwin was more beneficial than I ever could've realized while still attending. I grew into who I was and while partaking in the Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership, I developed my own personal leadership style. This came in handy when I commissioned into the U.S. Air Force but trains any and all women to be comfortable with who they are. Class sizes were small and I felt like the staff cared about me as an individual and were tentative to my needs for graduation. Plus, Staunton is a beautiful little town!
