1992 - 1996, Bachelor of Science
Laurentian has lots to offer, something for everyone. Personally, I benefitted from the natural surroundings, small class sizes, being able to meet with profs one-on-one, program flexibility, and being able to study in both official languages. Going to LU was a great experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed my four years there.
1993-1999, B.Sc. Hon
I admit that LU was my second choice. I had originally applied to "top" schools in Canada and had my heart set on becoming a surgeon. That all changed when I was accepted to LU. I quickly liked the idea of being in Northern Ontario relatively far from home. Had I have stayed close to home to study I fear I may have gone home often and missed out on much of the university experience. Being at LU I spent most weekends in Sudbury and grew to love the independence being away from home gave me. At LU I quickly realised that I did not want to be a surgeon. Class sizes at LU are relatively small and you really get a chance to engage with professors and advisors. The educational experience is a very close and personal one and as a student you are forced to participate. This direct "one-on-one" interaction with professors was perfect for me and led me to my passion for Ecology. LU, being in Northern Ontario and somewhat remotely located is surrounded by the great outdoors. This is key to teach such fields as biology, wildlife ecology, habitat ecology, etc... All year long as a student you get to study, as one very influential professor loved to state, "Head Down, Ass Up". You can't learn ecology from a book and many of the "top schools" are surrounded by large cities making book learning a large part of the experience. At LU you learn hands on, in the field, working side by side with professors that are passionate about the learning experience. LU is far from being "Last Chance", LU is an opportunity. If you value your education and are looking for a place where you feel valued as a student, want to interact closely with your peers, and want to learn hands on, make LU your first choice. I didn't but I'm sure glad I took the opportunity when I got a second chance
