School Description

James Madison University was established by the Virginia legislature as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women in 1908 to train public school teachers. The school was renamed to State Normal School for Women in 1914 and then to State Teacher College in 1924. in 1938, it was renamed to Madison College and eventually it was awarded "university" status in 1977 which gave the college its present day name.
