School Description

Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) were originally two separate colleges: Hobart College (founded in 1822) and William Smith College (founded in 1908). The Colleges enjoy a rich and unique history that spans nearly 200 years on Seneca Lake.

The Colleges’ mission statements states “Hobart and William Smith Colleges are a student-centered learning environment, globally focused, grounded in the values of equity and service, developing citizens who will lead in the 21st century.” The Colleges have been named among the nation's top colleges and universities with the most recipients of US Fulbright Student Awards.

Students at HWS have access to talented, caring professors and work closely with their faculty advisers to design an academic plan that is tailored to their own interests. At the core of their education at HWS, students are taught to think critically.
