Heriot-Watt University’s history dates back to 1821 when the School of Arts of Edinburgh was established by Scottish businessman Leonard Horner. In 1852, the school changed its name Watt Institution and School of Arts and shortly after, in 1855, to Heriot-Watt College in honor of George Heriot (philanthropist and financier to King James) and James Watt, (inventor and engineer in 18th century). Over the years Heriot-Watt University has grown tremendously and established a reputation for world-class teaching and practical, leading-edge research, making it one of the top UK universities for business and industry.
Today Heriot-Watt is recognized internationally as a centre for high calibre research in science, engineering and business. With 5 campuses: 3 in the UK - Edinburgh, Scottish Borders and Orkney - 1 in Dubai and 1 in Malaysia, Heriot-Watt deliver degree programs to 31,000 students globally; it also boasts the largest international student cohort in Scotland.
