School Description

Georgia State University, founded in 1913, started out as an ‘evening school of commerce’ of the Georgia Institute of Technology. The School moved to several locations to support its growth and development. And by the 1930s, Georgia Tech Evening School of Commerce was designated an independent college, under the University System of Georgia. A little over three decades later, the school was renamed Georgia State College.

Over the years, Georgia State College has expanded considerably, both in terms of its programs and colleges. The original two colleges of the University – the College of Business Administration and the College of Arts and Sciences – were joined by the Colleges of Education, Urban Life, Allied Health Sciences, and General Studies. The Colleges of Urban Life and General Studies were later combined to form the College of Public and Urban Affairs, the College of Allied Health Sciences changed its name to the College of Health Sciences, and the College of Law was a new college added to the university. In 1969 the college was renamed once again as Georgia State University. Today Georgia State University enrolls over 32,000 students. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

            1996-1999, M.S.

            Valuing my master's degree

I will value and draw from my experience earning my Master's of Science in Urban Studies with a concentration in nonprofit management from Georgia State University. I now teach philanthropy and nonprofit administration at Grand Valley State University, mostly to graduate students. My experience not only influenced me in my academic and professional careers, but it has impacted my life and helped shape me as a person. My professors such as Arthur Brooks, Ted Poister, Harvey Newman and others were wonderful. I also had the opportunity to teach part-time at GSU a course I developed in volunteer administration. It was that experience that prompted me to pursue a career in academia. I became hooked on teaching.
