Gatton College of Business and Economics, was founded in 1925 as the College of Commerce. Over the years the College saw several significant developments. In 1948 the College's enrollment grew to around 1000 students. In 1952 the MBA degree was offered. In 1967 The Department of Accounting was created at the College. In 1968 the College was renamed the College of Business & Economics. The first phonathon was held in 1985 where students called the alumni to request financial support; and in 1991 the United States Information Agency gave the college a grant for the development of economies in Central and Eastern Europe. In 1995 the College was renamed to honor Mr. Carol Martin Gatton, for his pledge of $14 million.
Gatton College is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), since 1926. The College’s accounting programs have also been accredited by the AACSB, which has only been given to less than five percent of the world’s business programs. In total Gatton College has 13 programs which are fully accredited by the AACSB.

The program offers courses that focus on the study of the systematic and efficient allocation of resources; economic theory; micro and macroeconomics; comparative economic systems; banking systems; international economics; quantitative analytical methods; and public policy.
