Fisk University was founded in 1865 six months after the end of the Civil War. Founders, John Ogden, the Reverend Erastus Milo Cravath and the Reverend Edward P. Smith established it as Fisk School in Nashville. Fisk conducted its first class on January 9, 1866 with students ranging between the ages of seven to seventy. All students commonly shared experiences of slavery, poverty and a passion for learning. In 1930 the University became the first African-American school to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Fisk was also the first African-American school to gain a place on the approved lists of the Association of American Universities (1933) and the American Association of University Women (1948).

In 1952 the National Association of Schools of Music accredited Fisk for its music program; Fisk also the first private black college to gain a charter for the first Phi Beta Kappa chapter on its campus.
