School Description

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) was established in 1849. EMU started as Michigan State Normal School with the support of the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan. The school was founded with the aim of equipping individuals with the art of teaching, providing a good common school education and instructing students in the fields of mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and the laws of the United States. EMU subsequently evolved into a college and eventually attained university status.

EMU'S faculty, alumni and the student body consist of CEOs from developed businesses, a National Student Teacher of the Year, National Teacher of the year, various Fullbright Scholarship students and Milken Family Foundation National Educators award winners, as well as many Michigan Teachers of the year.     The program in early childhood education is designed for those who hold teacher certification and have or are seeking careers as classroom teachers (preschool through third grade), child care program directors or other positions related to the care and education of children ages birth through eight years.
