School Description

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) can trace its roots back to 1874, with the founding of Central University in Richmond. The University as we know today was established in 1906 as Eastern Kentucky State Normal School. In 1922 the school was transformed into a four-year institution and changed its name to the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College, awarding its first degrees in 1925. The school received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1928.

In 1930 Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College shortened its name to the Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. Five years later the College expanded its offering by adding graduate studies; and in 1948, the General Assembly removed the word Teachers from the school’s name, and authorised it to award nonprofessional degrees. In 1966, the College changed its name once again to Eastern Kentucky University. EKU awarded its first doctoral degree – in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in 2010. Today, the University serves over 11,500 students.

The best time of my life! Great schoolI come from the Netherlands and did a semester abroad at EKU. Withouth a doubt I can say that it is a great school! The teachers are nice and are willing to help you. Especially for a foreign student it can be difficult to blend in or to find your way around. But with some help from both teachers and students it was a peace of cake ;). At Eastern I made my best memories!
