School Description

Birkbeck, University of London was established in the year 1823 as the London Mechanics' Institute, which admitted working people who wanted to learn about science, arts, and economics during a time when education for the working class was a controversial business. 35 years later, the institution has grown to become the go-to choice for students who wanted a university education but cannot afford to study full time. By 1920, Birkbeck formally became a part of the University of London.

Today, Birkbeck can be found in two campuses in London: a main campus in the student-centered area of Bloomsbury, and another across the city at the University Square in Stratford. It enrolls over 15,500 students in its five schools through which the university offers nearly 200 undergraduate and over 100 postgraduate courses in areas of arts, business, economics, informatics, law, science, social sciences, history, and philosophy. Socializing with other students at Birkbeck is a breeze with the university's Student Central located in the main campus, where students have easy access to sports facilities, societies, and a wide variety of music venues and dining options.
