School Description

Binghamton University of New York was founded in 1946 as Triple Cities College with the aim to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. The school was initially a branch of the Syracuse University. After four years the college became a part of the State University of New York and was renamed the Harpur College. Till 1953 the Harpur College was one of the only two public liberal arts colleges in the region. In 1961 the campus shifted across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Due to the growth in the number of enrollments and an excellent reputation Harpur College was selected as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the state system. In 1956 the campus was officially given the name of the State University of New York Binghamton University. The informal name came to be known as Binghamton University in 1992.

Currently Binghamton University has 13,632 undergraduate and 3,660 graduate students. The best public university in the northeast. A world-class institution, Binghamton University offers students a broad, interdisciplinary education with an international perspective and one of the most vibrant research programs in the nation. Ranked among the elite public universities in the country, Binghamton challenges students academically, not financially, in its unique, best-of-both-worlds environment. Our academic culture rivals a first-rate private university — rigorous, collaborative and boldly innovative — while our campus culture exemplifies the best kind of public university experience: richly diverse students, active social life and deep engagement within the community.

While I was at the School of Advanced Technology in the 70', faculty members instilled in me the need for dedication to research, exploration, out-of-the-box thinking and invention. Pushing the boundaries further from a Masters to a PhD to post-graduate work, they allowed me to invest in my future and apply the principals of learning during the past 35 years. When I visit these days I see the spirit and endeavor in the students and faculty alike. Binghamton U. has class and style.

          • Testimony
            2006-2010, BS

Binghamton University isn't just a premier public, it is a premier public with an incredible value no matter where you come from. Binghamton is the type of school where diversity and self discovery are at it's core. Students who self select Binghamton are value driven and look to get the most out of their years...using it as a platform for whatever is next. Everyone can talk about a university with "great faculty, research, alumni connections, living experiences, and students"...but only a few can say that as one of best values in the nation. Thanks to the incredible efficiency of SUNY system driving down the cost for the student. If you know the value of a dollar, Binghamton will make the most sense. Oh, and it is in NY!
