School Description

Binghamton University of New York was founded in 1946 as Triple Cities College with the aim to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. The school was initially a branch of the Syracuse University. After four years the college became a part of the State University of New York and was renamed the Harpur College. Till 1953 the Harpur College was one of the only two public liberal arts colleges in the region. In 1961 the campus shifted across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Due to the growth in the number of enrollments and an excellent reputation Harpur College was selected as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the state system. In 1956 the campus was officially given the name of the State University of New York Binghamton University. The informal name came to be known as Binghamton University in 1992.

Currently Binghamton University has 13,632 undergraduate and 3,660 graduate students. The best public university in the northeast. A world-class institution, Binghamton University offers students a broad, interdisciplinary education with an international perspective and one of the most vibrant research programs in the nation.
