School Description

Bennington College’s history dates back to the 1920s where it emerged as a vision of forward-thinking educators and civic leaders. By 1932 these leaders secured a charter and the land needed to provide America with a progressive new college for higher education. The College opened its doors with 87 students and since then it has been flourishing. Over the years Bennington created a reputation for itself, as a vanguard institute among American colleges and universities. In the 1930s and 40s dancers came to Bennington to map the way for modern dance. Painters and sculptors also flocked to the College in the 1940s and 50s, as Bennington was the first college of its kind to introduce visual and performing arts at an equal weightage in the liberal arts curriculum. In the 1980s and 90s numerous writers came to the College to showcase their talent in contemporary literature.

Today Bennington has become a hub for artists, writers, scientists and individuals who want to innovatively apply their talent to solve global issues. Bennington urges its student to be fully responsible for their education, work and life. In order to put that in practice Bennington has put the Plan Process into action. This is a structure which students can use to design and evaluate their education. Following a series of meetings with the college faculty, students learn to form clarity on what they want to study and how they plan on studying it. The whole Bennington experience offers students tutorials and projects beyond the classroom, a field work term and other projects which the students wish to undertake.

            Practical Creativity!

What I loved about becoming an artist at Bennington: With each project that I wanted to do or invent, I was confronted with the task of constructing a timeline or a "retro-planning"! When I graduated I had the ( baby) skills to run a street theatre company in France! I now direct a non for profit of 101 performers with a staff of 15 AND I still perform twice a week. Bennington helped me believe in the WHOLE project not just the artistic, juicy part. ( a special Thanks to Gunnar Schoenbeck, Henry Brandt, Paul Gray,Frank Baker...)
