School Description

American University Washington DC, was chartered by Congress in 1893. The University was envisioned by George Washington; but John Fletcher Hurst was the one to turn this dream into a reality. His vision for the University was to train public servants for the future. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of a building and the Methodist-affiliated University opened in 1914. AU Washington started out with just 28 students, which included five women, which was quite liberal at the time. The University underwent many expansions and developments over the years, including acquiring the Washington College of Law and the launch of its various schools.

AU Washington has made strides over the years, today it serves over 7000 undergraduate, almost 3500 graduate students and has over 1500 students enrolled in its law program. Its student population is represented by all 50 states of the US and hails from over 137 countries beyond its borders and the University employs 848 full-time faculty, 94 percent of which hold the highest degree in their field.

1994-1995, MA Journalism and Public Affairs

What I liked best about AU? Great instructors, incredibly sophisticated training in government affairs in Washington, DC, the home of American politics; AU's international environment, and my very special classmates from around the world. Work was tough but it paid off for me. My only regret is that I can't do it all over again! I do miss my days at AU! Sigh.

            1982-1983, MA SOC, Journalism

I'm so grateful for my assistantship many moons ago, in the School of Communication, allowing me to extend my professional journalistic horizons far beyond what might have been, had I stayed home in the Puget Sound area for grad school. Now, I'm grateful to be an early digital news pioneer who also teaches in the SOC: In my own way, I'm trying to give back to the vibrant and diverse community that has so much to offer in internships, exposure to world-class professionals and thought leaders - minus the chaos of NYC.

1995-1997, Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)

For a Kogod MBA '97, the most noticeable was the globalized pool of students with experiences brought from foreign economies. Not to forget about the well-tuned professors and mentors with rich and practical work experience. All beautifully melted in the US capital of Washington, DC !
