Alcorn State University, located outside Lorman, Mississippi, is a land-grant institution, awarding undergraduate and graduate degrees through its schools of agriculture, Research Extension & Applied Sciences; Arts & Sciences; Business; Education & Psychology; and Nursing.  

School Description

Alcorn State University, founded in 1871, was named after the governor of the state, then James L. Alcorn. The University was formed to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans and is the oldest historically black institution in the United States. The State of Mississippi purchased the Oakland College campus as the university’s resident site. Alcorn started out as a men’s college but eventually admitted women. The University was renamed Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1878 and in 1974, was renamed once again as Alcorn State University.

Today Alcorn offers degree programs in more than 50 areas of study, the University has campuses in Lorman, Natchez and Vicksburg, over 800 faculty and staff and a student body of more than 4,000 students who hail from 65 counties, 30 states, and at least 18 countries. Alcorn State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges and Schools. It also has additional accreditations for its various programs.

    Alcorn State University hosted a ‘Walk, Run or Ride Summer Extravaganza’ in 2015 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the signing of the 2nd Morrill Act which was instrumental to the creation of 17 historically black land grant colleges (like itself) in the former Confederate states.

Alcorn is a family oriented university that takes all students no matter race, religion, or creed and throws them into a melting pot of success. The institution is isolated so there aren't many distractions. The campus is one of the most beautiful and is yet growing and the people there from professors to maintenance are rooting for you to succeed.
