Deakin University, established under the Deakin University Act 1974, was at the time just the fourth university founded in Victoria, Australia. The following year, the University branched into six schools of Business Studies, Education, Engineering and Architecture, Humanities, Pure and Applied Sciences and Social Sciences. Deakin enrolled its first students in 1977.
Over the years the University expanded in all aspects. In 1981, Deakin launched, a one of a kind, MBA off campus course. In 1986 that Deakin established its School of Nursing and throughout the 90s Deakin saw several mergers with other institutes and colleges. In 1994 Deakin was the first University to open an office in India and in 1998 it opened its English Language Institute to facilitate international students who had difficulty with the language.
In 2001, Deakin University joined the University Library of Australia, giving it access to an unlimited resources of information. Today, Deakin has campuses in Geelong, Warrnambool, Burwood and Melbourne; and learning centers in Dandenong, Craigieburn and Werribee. Some of Deakin’s notable alumni include Bridget McKenzie, Senator for Victoria; and Julie Attwood, Member of Legislative Assembly of Queensland.
