School Description

Colgate University was originally named Madison University, however in 1890 the university changed it's name in recognition of the Colgate family and it's gifts to the school. In fact, James B. Colgate, a son of William Colgate, created a $1,000,000 endowment named the Dodge Memorial Fund.
