Carnegie Mellon University

School Description

Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1900 through its donor and namesake, Andre Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant who started as a humble factory worker in a textile mill and rose to become a successful entrepreneur, founding what would later become the largest steel producing company in the world by the end of the 19th century. At the time, the institution first opened its doors as the Carnegie Technical Schools, offering two to three year certificates in the arts and engineering. Throughout the years, it managed to expand and flourish despite two World Wars, and by 1967, it merged with the Mellon Institute to form the Carnegie Mellon University.

Attracting over 13,600 students from 114 countries around the world, Carnegie Mellon University today is composed of 7 schools and colleges through which it offers 77 bachelor's and 147 master's degree programs in areas of engineering, fine arts, humanities and social sciences, information systems, public policy and management, science, computer science, and business. Carnegie Mellon University also offers a variety of housing options for students, with up to 28 residence halls, apartments, and townhouses. Ranked among the top 25 best cities for millennials, Pittsburgh is a budding city home to over 86,000 students and local businesses, beautiful green parks, film production sites, and gread dining options.
