Program Description

The pre-pharmacy program prepares students for entrance into pharmacy school. The program typically runs in conjunction with the attainment of an undergraduate degree. While a student’s major does not need to be health-related, it is helpful, as a pre-pharmacy program requires a lot of science courses. Students gain a liberal arts education as they take the required courses for the program. Most students complete the program in four years if they take 12 to 14 courses each semester or take summer school.

To prepare for a medical career as a pharmacist, students must take classes such as biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, genetics, psychology and statistics. Other courses that are recommended include advanced writing, immunology and chemical analysis.

A pre-pharmacy program prepares students for the intense study required as a pharmacy student as well as for a career. Pharmacists can work in a variety of settings, and they may study how drugs interact or educate patients about specific medication.
