Calvin College

School Description

Calvin College was founded in 1876 by the Christian Reformed Church in North America and is named after the 16th-century reformer John Calvin. Calvin College is affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) and Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). Calvin started out as a school of ministry training with just seven students. Over the years it expanded from a school that trained pastors to one that taught aspiring teachers as well.

The College expanded considerably in the 1900s broadening its curriculum to include pre-professional courses. By 1906 the literary department was officially established as the John Calvin Junior College, a separate entity from Calvin Seminary but over time the institution transformed into four-year college and renamed Calvin College in 1931. Today Calvin College is home to more than 4000 students.
