Science Education (California State University - Long Beach)
The science education teaching credential program at California State University, Long Beach equips individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to teach science at the middle school or high school levels. This program has two focuses: content and pedagogy. The content refers to the science, whereas pedagogy refers to the ability to teach. Before graduating, students must demonstrate that they know both what to teach and how to teach it.
Because California schools often offer integrated science, participants of the CSU Long Beach science education program must demonstrate that they hold in-depth knowledge in the content area. To prepare students for this type of teaching, the program requires them to complete introductory level courses in a variety of science fields, including but not limited to, biology, chemistry and earth science.
During the program, students will learn about classroom management, methodology and reading science-based literature in a way in which students understand. The program length varies depending on the level of education a participant already has.
