Program Description

The physics & astronomy department at California State University, Long Beach offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree in physics for undergraduate students. The programs, which focus on research and theory, aims to acquaint students with the basic concepts of physical science for whatever career they may pursue.

Like most undergraduate degrees, both the B.A. and B.S. in physics can be completed in four years, with upper-division courses in the subject area accounting for the latter two years of study. The B.A. option is tailored to students who aspire to teach at the secondary level and focus on a traditional liberal arts education. The B.S., by contrast, is intended for students seeking employment in the science industries or planning on graduate study.

Classes for both degree options include such electives as Mechanics and Heat, Applied Modern Physics, Differential Equations, and General Chemistry. In addition to classroom coursework, students will complete labs to apply their learning and develop hands-on scientific experience.
