Program Description

Careers in mass communication require skills acquired through hands-on, practical training in a real-world environment that builds on a strong foundation of theoretical study. A Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from California State University, Long Beach provides education, training, and experience in both areas to equip students for opportunities in multimedia storytelling. Graduates may go on to become managers of media organizations, or they may work directly in the field as broadcasters, bloggers, designers, editors, or reporters.

Journalism majors are required to complete at least 120 units to earn their degree. General education requirements account for 48 of these units, while another 48 consists of coursework specific to the major. The more advanced the course, the more likely it requires the completion of prerequisites in preparation. Some of the prerequisites are general education requirements, while others are introductory or lower-division journalism courses. Sometimes the prerequisite is merely upper division standing. Before graduation, all students are required to complete an internship for three units.
