Program Description

Students hoping to work for positive changes in society through the non-profit sector, government, law, or in business may find that a Bachelor of Arts degree in Gender Studies from California State University, Long Beach provides them with a firm footing upon this noble path. The oral and written communication skills, analytical thinking, and creative problem-solving capabilities that students develop with a major in Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, as it is more accurately known, apply to a wide range of careers.

As with most baccalaureate-level degree programs at the university, 48 units of general education courses are required to graduate from the Gender Studies program. Additionally, degree-specific coursework of 45 units must be completed. The total number of units required to complete the degree is 120.

Major course requirements consist of seven core classes and eight degree-specific electives. There are 25 options for elective courses, and students must choose from among them to complete at least 18 units. The seven core courses are required of all Gender Studies majors.
