Program Description

The Bachelor of Fine Arts at California State University, Long Beach, allows students to choose from a variety of topics in the fine arts. Degree programs are available in art, dance, design, film, music, and theatre arts, with specializations within each. Each program also has specializations available as a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree instead of the BFA.

Admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts program requires formal declaration of the major once a student reaches 60 credit hours of coursework but no more than 95 credit hours. Students may declare a pre-major in anticipation of formally declaring the major once they reach appropriate status. Admission is considered competitive and requires an application process which may include a portfolio, audition, or other sample of the student’s prior work in the area of study.

Each program is intended to cover four years of study, with students applying for formal admission to the BFA program by the end of their second year and includes 120 total credit hours of coursework, split between major requirements and core curriculum.
