Bloomsburg University was established in 1839, as an academy with the purpose of teaching youth the elements of classical education. In 1916, the institute became the Bloomsburg State Normal School, after it was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1927, the institute began offering Bachelor of Science in education. After several name changes, it officially became Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in 1983.
Bloomsburg University has a 280 acre campus that consists of 54 buildings. The campus is split into Lower campus and Upper campus. The Lower has residence halls, academic buildings and the library. The Upper campus has athletic facilities as well as 3 student apartment complexes. Students at BU have a choice of over 250 clubs and organizations to be involved in.
