Binghamton University was established in 1946 as the Triple Cities College. As a branch of Syracuse University, Its initial purpose was to serve local veterans returning from World War II. The institution was renamed Harpur College in 1950 after it was incorporated into the State University of New York. The name change to Binghamton University in 1992.
Binghamton University has over 13,000 undergraduates and over 3,000 graduate students. Binghamton students have the choice of a dozen club and intramural sports teams. Students can also benefit from 'FitSpace' which is the state-of-the-art fitness center. In addition, the Outdoor Pursuits program organizes off-campus activities like kayaking and hiking.
