Bates College
School Description
Bates College traces its early beginnings from over 150 years ago, when it was founded by abolitionists in the year 1855, making it New England's very first coeducational college to admit students regardless race, religion, gender. Despite criticism from other colleges at a time when equal education opportunities for everyone was considered a futile business, its founders kept their firm belief in freedom and civil rights.
Today, Bates College's 109-acre campus in New England is home to nearly 1,800 undergraduate students representing 46 states and 58 foreign countries enrolled in 36 majors and 25 minors. Bates College prides itself in providing students with a rigorous and highly personalized education through a student-to-faculty ration of 10 per every 1 faculty member, 100% of whom hold the highest degree in their field.
