School Description

Barnard Colleges, founded in 1889, was named after Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard, an American educator and mathematician who served the tenth president of Columbia from 1864 to 1889. His motive was to educate woman and give them equal privileges as men. Today, Barnard is one of the most sought-after liberal arts college for women in the United States. It offers its students many opportunities, be it traditional majors, interdisciplinary programs, challenging internships, laboratory research, international travel, field research, women’s studies or leadership studies.

Over the years, Barnard graduates have made their mark as leaders in the arts, business, government and science, and as activists for numerous causes. Barnard’s alumni includes 8 Pulitzer Prize Winners and 10 MacArthur Fellowships (Genius Grants).
