School Description

Wingate University was originally established as a high school in Wingate, North Carolina in 1896. Forced to change with the times, Wingate was turned into a boarding in the early 1900s and by 1923 it started offering a two year baccalaureate education. Although the school struggled during the period of the Great Depression it prevailed and by the mid-1970s, Wingate College established itself as outstanding private two-year college, granting its first bachelor’s degrees in 1979. Over the next year Wingate added more majors and graduate programs.

Wingate saw extensive development over the next few years; in 2003 it opened the School of Pharmacy which offered the PharmD degree – the school’s first doctorate degree; in 2006 it introduced a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership followed by a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership in 2008.

Over the years new extensions were also added to the college; in 2011, the Levine College of Health Sciences was opened on the main campus to house the School of Pharmacy and the Department of Physician Assistant Studies. The Hendersonville campus opened in 2011 to provide doctor of pharmacy and MBA programs to western North Carolina; the Hendersonville campus added PA Studies in 2013 and Wingate added the Doctor of Physical Therapy program in 2014.
