School Description

Named after Dr. William Jewell, physician, legislator and Baptist, who donated the land for the college, the college was found in 1849. It was the earliest private, four-year men’s colleges west of the Mississippi. By 1920, women were also being admitted to the college. In 1982, it developed its study-abroad program with Cambridge and Oxford universities in England. With its curricula and exceptional student achievements, the institute has earned its reputation. Among the notables include Robin Carnahan (Missouri Secretary of State, 2005–2013).
